Tri-Via is the third car built by John Bell, a retired Ford Production Manager and is his second three-wheeler. He chose to use a motorbike to be it's motive power because all the bits were there and it was so light. The car was built to a strict budget and was completed for less than $3,000.
John has never liked fibreglass and has always had a love of plywood hence the use of plywood as the key body material. This has been varnished and then wrapped around a simple space frame chassis giving the entire car a warm feel. Apart from the motorbike most of the other parts in the car are what he had lying around or were on a shelf.
The car features an ordinary pushbike speedo mounted ingeniously to one of the front motorbike wheels and gives a very accurate readout. However he sometimes has to change the battery to keep it working. Gear change happens by the normal Honda bike's sequential gearbox being moved forwards or backwards via the floor mounted gear stick. Headlights are dipped by literally tipping them forward. The standard motorbike wiring and controls have been extended to either side of the steering wheel and work the same as they would on your standard motorbike.
Tri-Via is a car that will always catch the attention where ever it goes and John says the car is everything he intended it to be which is a unique and fun building experience. He has now started his fourth car which is also three-wheeled.
