Restorer: John Thomson Year Purchased: 1996 Year Finished: 1997 Type: Special Profile Date: March 1998
John purchased the car from Graeme McKenzie who lives in the manawatu. Once he got it home it soon became apparent that it needed some major work done. Most of us are aware of what is involved in a kit buildup. Well John decided to do it slightly differently. Having an existing car he decided to throw most of the bits away and start again. Bits like the engine and suspension were some of the bigger pieces tossed. All the bits that were not tossed were modified in some way to either make them work or look better. Or to put it another way he did not touch the front guards or rear diff.
The full flat windscreen was replaced by aeroscreens as being a bit of a motorbike nut he wanted wind in the face motoring without the need of a crash helmet. Front and rear running gear are out of a Vauxhall Viva/Magnum 1800. The front has been lowered and the back raised to improve handling. Often where car parts were deemed to be not suitable motorcycle parts were used instead.
Being a fan of Lotus 7’s (See Lotus 7A Profile) John wanted to retain that distinctive look which he succeeded in doing as well as keeping the cars unique ‘special’ style. The car is painted a blood red. Interior is black with a wooden dash and Triumph instrumentation.
