Most people would define a kit car as a fiberglass body with a steel chassis and a box of bits to attach to it. Probably with several bits missing too. This is basically how Ian bought his Dart sight unseen. His was also left hand drive to make it more of a challenge. Advertised as a “low mileage 1960 original” probably because it hadn’t moved for years. It had stopped moving sometime in the 70’s with a blown motor and sat outside ever since. This was all obvious when it arrived on the prices doorstep. Nobody would ever buy a kit car in this condition.
The car has been totally striped not that there was much left to strip and changed to right hand drive. Another motor was needed. The Daimler V8 had a reasonable production run and Ian thought that another motor would not be hard to find. It wasn’t but it was the wrong motor. The 2.5 V8 motor that was fitted to the saloons has almost no parts in common with its little brother other than perhaps the block. Finally a motor was found being used in a boat in Auckland. After some haggling it was successfully purchased. The flywheel minus ring gear was found in Tauranga. Second gear synchro and ring bearing from Tauranga and Christchurch. Wire wheels, radiator and hood from England. Gearbox from the Daimler club and gearbox cross member from Auckland. This car has been a mission.
The few parts that came with the car have been rebuilt, painted or chromed before being refitted to the car.
