After selling his supercharged Chevron Sports to Tim Rush, the hunt was on for a go-faster replacement. Huw looked around for another strong NZ sports car to build. Bruce Turnbull, manufacturer of the Saker SV1 and Sprint, lives locally and after some negotiations Huw was the proud owner of a chassis and fibreglass attachments. The build started in March and with the help of his father, Ken, he was determined to have it finished for the 2005 Whittakers meeting.
Previously they had built a Chevron from a rolling chassis, so they knew exactly what they were in for. Virtually everything was machined and hand built as required.
The car was entered for the November 05 Whittakers not knowing if the car would be finished on time. As it turned out they were putting on the mirrors on the Thursday before the meeting.
The only restrictions the wife put on Huw was that the car had to be road legal –warranted and registered – well, the crash at Whittakers 2006 in the wet put that and certification on hold as they had five weeks to rebuild the car for the next round of the series. Since then they have altered the suspension – new adjustable shocks all round, new sway bar on the front and keep this quiet from her indoors – a set of racing slicks. The car had a successful first season finishing 1st in its class and 3rd overall in the NZ Sportscar Series.
