The ideas for this car started forming in Brian’s mind some 40 years ago when he realized that the price of top line vintage sports cars was always going to keep ahead of his disposable cash. The aim was a practical road car albeit with minimal weather protection, but in the style of the late 20’s, early 30’s. Actual building started after the chance acquisition of pairof P100 lamps in almost mint condition, and no car to put them on.
With the Jaguar motor there was no shortage of power or the worry of being stuck with huge unsprung weight, the decision was made to go for strength rather than light weight and a stiff chassis (100x50x3 RHS) so that the body didn’t suffer the wracking of the genuine vintage cars. The body is all steel, painted BRG — what else? (Caprithane.) There are a couple of experimental features on the suspension and brakes that the jury is still out on. The front axle is cut in half to become swing axles (it was too long anyway) and 1/2 elliptic (cart) springs doing the fore and aft location, as well as springing. So far they have handled the braking loads OK. The rear axle has convergent trailing links on the offside and a single trailing link on the near side. This is supposed to neutralize the torque reaction in the axle and reduce wheel-spin. This necessitates separately anchoring the near side brake with convergent anchoring links to keep the weight on the offside wheel during braking.
The gearbox is a Moss M.O.D. and the wheels are K.O. wire. 3 x 2" S.U’s feed a fearsome amount of fuel into the engine and features such as cross ply tyres, worm and peg steering box with no power assistance and hard damping (equals hard ride) are designed to add to the vintage “feel”.
