Steve was browsing TradeMe when he spotted a McLaren GTM6 replica. Once seen, he had to own it. His wife Jill agreed as it was unlikely that another car like it would come up in the near future. A quick trip to Helensville and the third project car arrived in his garage.
It had suffered some water damage due to the fact that it only had a front windscreen and no side or rear protection. It was a bit of a pimp machine with fake fur headlining and bright purple metallic paintwork. Although not totally sure, Steve believes that the body was imported from Manta in America to go on a VW floorpan. When the last owner purchased it the car was powered by a Mazda Rotary. That owner was not fond of Rotary engines so, in 2006, he got Fraser cars to pluck it out and put a Toyota MR2 subframe in its place. This they did very nicely by cutting off the rear of the VW floorpan and fitting a tubular space-frame over the old chassis up to the front suspension to increase rigidity. The MR2 rear subframe including motor and 5 speed gearbox with the coil-over shocks were bolted straight onto the new mount points.
Steve reconditioned the VW front suspension, installed a new steering box, lowered the pedal box to give his feet more room and spent considerable time getting the instruments working. Six months later it was a different car. The curvature of the car was now complete with a lovely polycarbonate rear screen and it even had ingenious opening side windows. Steve had taken to a friendly painter, a very rippled and tired body, and said do the best you can with it. What came back was smooth and blemish free. Some soul searching had been done when Steve was considering fitting the rear wing, it looked period and made the car look just that much better so it was fitted.
