Steve has always wanted to build his own car. It had to be a sports car and preferably one with a bit of character. A replica of a modern day exotic would be nice, but one evoking the era of the 30's and 40's would be better. The time factor prevented him from designing a 'Special' from scratch, as some keen enthusiasts do, and the cost of the kits available on the market saw him looking elsewhere. Enter Graeme Crimp. He was in the process of finishing off the build-up of a car called the J.C. Midge. (See JC Midge April '90 profile) This convinced Steve that this was the way to go.
The car is based, loosely, on the J2 MG Midget of the 1930's and is built out of plywood and sheet aluminium from a set of plans and patterns obtained in the UK. The powerplant is a Toyota 4K 1300cc unit and Toyota 5-speed gearbox. The result is a very peppy wee car with a good power to weight ratio. The chassis and running gear is 13/60 Triumph Herald, giving it disc brakes on the front end. It runs on 15-inch wire wheels and tried and true Firestone Cavallino 165/70 series tyres.
